Orkideh Hajivandi and her all-female band “Orkideh (Orchid)” who perfromed at last year’s Fajr Music Festival and came third are to soon go on the road for a mini tour. The band does not need any permit for their concerts since all winners of the festival were granted a one-year conditional permit!
Ever since the Sopranos got wrapped up last year I’ve been waiting and anticipating the ultimate DVD collection for which the HBO urged the collectors to “reserve lots of money for Christmas 2008″! And around the same time a fellow collector of mine, while discussing product design and packaging, asked me how I would design the forthcoming Sopranos set if it was up to me and my answer was “a simple yet classy packaging, rectangular and black with only the show’s logo on”. And now a year after a strikingly similar-looking set has been announced to hit stores before Christmas!
Negar Pedram recently wrote in Hamshahri about the industry-media liaison in Iran and argued that the reason why there hasn’t been any culture of criticism and reviewing of music established inside the country during the past three decades is mainly because the journalists are aware of the restriction sand limitations of the domestic industry and that the press is commercially dependent on the music industry and has turned into more of a propaganda organ than public service!
Is the beautiful title of a beautiful artwork by my dear talented friend Amelia, which I thought sharing with you. I love the sense of tranquility and joy it conveys and the nostalgic feeling it evokes in me!
Sex and the City is back, at least on the silver screen and finally women of the western world have got their equivalent to the Star Wars phenomenon! Every single premier is crowded with girl groups dressed and glammed up as Carrie, Charlotte, Samantha and Miranda!
Suddenly whatever seemingly corky rite or bounding ritual we men have been attending to amid the premier of a Star Wars movie is justified and starts making total sense! Doesn’t it ladies?!
You realise that you are getting old when you start to think its too soon for a 20 years old song to be covered! Which I lately tend to do! I hear a remake and immediately think “already a remake?!!”, while it in fact is about time for a remake! It wasn’t yesterday but rather 20 years ago! I remember back in the 80’s, when I had started to discover the world of music and sometimes got to know a certain oldie through its remake, I always found the older music fans who found the remake too soon very strange! specially when the original was done in the 60’s! And I found these folks OLD!!! Old enough to having been around ages ago and having heard the original! And now I have become one of those ancient people myself!! I’m an old folk! hehehe
What better album to score your summer days with than the annual instalment of Tiesto’s “In Search For Sunrise” series? Also make sure to check out his recent REMIX release of the last studio album “Elements Of Life”!
Mohamad Reza Golzar warns everyone who is buying tickets to the Darkoob band’s debut concert hoping to see him playing and singing! I am no longer involved with any music act till later this year when I present my own new band!
I’ve been stressing the importance of design and packaging, the overall aesthetic presentation of an album on many occasions. And Madonna’s limited edition release of her latest album “Hard Candy” proves that a clever idea (and a not so expensive one) can do the trick and have people buying a mediocre album just because of its unique packaging! Even someone like me who isn’t a fan of Madonna’s!
The underground artist Ali Ashabi whose progressive songs have found a solid fan base through the past years has been casted for a role in the forthcoming motion picture “Aansooye Parchin”. It should be mentioned that Ashabi is still considered an illegal singer and has yet not been granted a permit for his singing activities inside the country!
Following the rumours that were announced as news by Iranian agencies a few days ago which claimed that Chris de Burgh had preformed a concert for the Mojahedin Khalgh Organisation in Paris and donated all profits to MKO, the artist and the ARIAN’s manager Mohsen Rajabpour have repeatedly rejected these allegations by claiming that the shown clip depicting members of the organisation wagging flags to de Burgh’s “Revolution” in a concert and then handing him flowers along with MKO’s flag has been staged and edited to serve its purpose, to ruin the reputation of the singer in Iran and along with it the chances for a live concert!
Those who hated the animated Hulk in Ang Lee’s movie a few years ago are slowly reconsidering their sentiment after having watched the new Hulk! The CG animation basically kills this movie despite the potential granted by the story and the actors, with action scenes looking like taken from a computer game’s cut scenes without really weighing and merging with the rest! And a hulk that looks like a well-groomed former boyband member on steroids! That will certainly give you a reason to reconsider your action, next time you are about to diss an aging boyband member from the 90’s attempting a desperate comeback! You never know, he just might pop green and kick your azz!!
Fereydoun Asraie is back, now with his surname fixed to his name in order to prevent all frauds and abuses that has happened in the past with fake Fereydouns appearing online and on stage claiming to be the original! According to Irane Emrooz he is also about to release a REMIX album which is to make up for the commercial failure and financial loss of his recent album “As To Dooram…”. Fereydoun explains that his sophomore domestic album was released due to miscalculations and during unfortunate circumstances, with the questionable selection of older songs and the far too slow pace of the album along with record company’s growl with Behrouz Saffarian! Fereydoun says that he will try to make a come back with a forthcoming album called “Gharibe II”, in which he intends to have full control and having it reflecting his own taste and choices!
And while the movie is being made a new Prince of Persia game with a whole new concept and character is beginning to see the light of day! With the tentative title “Prodigy” the new game aims to challenge the capacity of the Next-Gen consoles.
The “Prodigy” will not be a continuation of the former trilogy, it is not necessarily even the same Persian prince that is the hero of this story, however this time more features from the Persian mythology such as Ahriman will be presented and incorporated. The teaser certainly does its job excellently and leaves yours-truly drooling!
The Belgian DANCE MUSIC queen Kate Ryan has in recent years become a household name in Europe by covering French POP HITS from the 80’s. After Mylene Farmer’s “Desenchantee” and Desireless’ “Voyage Voyage” (video posted in september 2007) the time has come for France Gall’s Ella Fitzgerald tribute to be covered for the clubs! Kate’s success lies in the fact that she merely updates these songs while preserving the ingredients and essences which made them to HITS! “Free” is the name of Kate’s brand new album, featuring “Ella Ella”.
Rastin’s debut is finally released after years of postponing! Those of you who have read my blog ever since the start (reviewer’s randoms) have surely followed the process!
The summer has officially kicked off! Sweden is experiencing perhaps its hottest summer ever by having the weather that Southern Europe is supposed to have (but equally strangely doesn’t!) this time of the year! Also my vacation starts the coming week and that means that I will be start reviewing again, after the pause last month due to my other deadlines (thank you all for your patience by the way!). This weekend I’m winding down to music and sun! And one of the songs that has for the last 20 years started the soundtrack of my summer is the one-hit-wonder Black’s good old “Wonderful Life”! Such a gentle song and soothing voice, not to mention a peaceful video! Tends to take me back on a nostalgic trip every time I hear it …
I’m sure you recall my blog about Argavan! This talented little lady happens to be performing live on friday, on the Swedish national holiday. This would be on the main stage of one of Europe’s most famous amusement parks namely Liseberg, in front of a couple of thousand international visitors! If you happen to be around or near the place do attend the show which will take place at 3 PM, to show your support for this rising Iranian starlet on the international market!
Saeed Mohammadi has gathered Morteza, Sattar and Sheila for a small collection of songs composed by himself. The compilation called “Friends” is released on Caltex Records and the first of its kind to be released this decade! Various Artists compilations were trendy back in the 80’s/early 90’s in LA and late 90’s/early 2000 in Iran, but as the market got bigger and the industry stronger they eventually gave place to full-length solo albums. Hence this release is, in its own way, a sign of the stagnation that the industry is going through lately and thus the return of safer V/A compilations!
